There are plenty of fighting games out there, but when it comes to the king of the ring, even the most brutal brawler would struggle against Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat has been saying "finish him" to the competition since 1992, and as we look to the franchise's future, NetherRealm Studios could have grand plans.

We're not short of Mortal Kombat games, and alongside the 12 mainline games, we've had numerous spin-offs of varying quality. Now, franchise overseer Ed Boon has hinted about what he might have in the pipeline, including spin-offs based on two fan-favourite characters.

Ed Boon teases more Mortal Kombat spin-offs

When you tend to think of Mortal Kombat mainstays, Scorpion and Sub-Zero immediately come to mind. With them being two of the fighter's most marketable characters, it's no surprise Boon wants to capitalise on this. Although he's not actually announcing a spin-off, he's clearly open to the idea.

Replying to the notion of two characters getting a Shaolin Monks-style spin-off, Boon told fans, "Without a doubt, if (when?) we do one, it will be Scorpion and Sub-Zero." His cryptic mention of 'when' suggests that plans could already be in the works to make this happen - although nothing is official.

For those who don't know, Shaolin Monks was a 2005 spin-off focusing on Liu Kang and Kung Lao. There are still hopes of a Shaolin Monks sequel, but it's never come to pass. There have (currently) been four Mortal Kombat spin-offs, with 2022's Mortal Kombat: Onslaught being the latest as a mobile beat 'em up.

Although news of more spin-offs should fill us with joy, it seems not everyone is sold on the idea. On the r/Gaming subreddit, fans were divided on whether they'd be willing to stump up for a Scorpion and Sub-Zero spin-off. One unconvinced gamer wrote, "It's only 30 years late."

Another added, "Seeing the same characters going about the same story and ends up the same every single time is just boring. They are cool characters but there are far more interesting characters," and a third joked that the game would focus on microtransactions.

Boon has apparently been trying to get another full spin-off off the ground since Warner Bros. acquired the Mortal Kombat IP. As Scorpion and Sub-Zero were secret characters in Shaolin Monks, it seems Boon might've had this idea for a while. Much like Game of Thrones, we should prepare for a fight between fire and ice.
