The NFT bubble has well and truly burst, but their application into video games is still being contested. For some reason. I truly thought we were done with this.
Still, crypto bros insist that it's possible to see a chain of video games with cosmetics and features baked into non-fungible tokens that can be transferred from game to game. Despite the insane development time and crossover required for such an idea making it impossibly redundant for developers, fans are still adamant it will work, even though the framework was attempted by Valve internally over a decade ago, before it crumbled to ash.
But now, thankfully, the developers of one of the biggest games in history has decried NFTs. Phew.
Mojang Shoot Down NFTs In A New Blog Post
In a new post on the Minecraft blog, Mojang has made their stance on NFTs very clear. The new comments shooting down the practice after some modders and other opportunists have used Minecraft skins and seeds as NFTs in hopes of profiting from the game.
"NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots," reads the new post. "The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players."
The post also indicates that the team is going to be applying new rules to its terms & conditions that aid to prohibit the usage of NFTs in connection with Minecraft.
Minecraft Calls Out NFT Creators
Though they've clarified their feelings on NFTs, Mojang has taken it one step further by issuing a direct message to those using the Minecraft brand for their blockchain bastardisations.
"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods. We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming."
Plus, in an extra dramatic turn, this news from Mojang has caused a lot of NFT enthusiasts to drop out as quickly as they can, and the NFT Worlds floor has dropped out by 70%. The token price has utterly plummeted as everyone involved tries to abandon ship, and the future of blockchain projects in Minecraft has never looked bleaker.
It looks like Mojang has really made their point, and not only are they not making NFTs of their own, but they're going to be cracking down on those who do it on their behalf. Sorry, crypto bros - your time is up.
