Not that we were ever really worried, but as a brand-new trailer for Amazon's live-action Fallout series hits the internet, the video game adaptation really looks like it'll be one of the best of all times. It feels like we're in something of a TV and movie renaissance, and after The Last of Us claimed 2023, it looks like 2024 belongs to Fallout.
With Bethesda's apocalyptic adventure being up there with The Elder Scrolls in terms of its video game legacy, it was only a matter of time until someone opened up the vault of Fallout's potential. A live-action series was announced back in 2020, and thankfully, all signs point to Fallout being well worth the wait.
Matt Berry is destined to steal the show
Amazon has hyped the upcoming release of Fallout, which is now confirmed to drop all eight episodes like a nuclear bomb on April 11. The series boasts an all-star cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp's Walton Goggins, Yellow Jackets' Ella Purnell, and Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachlan, but did you hear another familiar voice?
Fallout comes from Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with the latest trailer showcasing a world that feels like it's been pulled from the mind of Bethesda. This whistle-stop tour of the Wasteland includes a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance from Matt Berry as a Mr. Handy robot.
It's not confirmed how big of a role Berry will have, although some are speculating he could be Cogsworth, the robot butler from Fallout 4. Either way, fans love the fact the What We Do in the Shadows actor is here. One viewer cheered, "Thank you for getting Matt Berry in on this.. absolutely perfect casting 😂."
Another added, "Goggins being a badass gunslinger? Matt Berry as an organ harvesting robot? Yeah, I'm in," while a third said, "Matt Berry being cast as Cogsworth immediately makes Fallout the best game to TV adaptation. I’m sorry The Last of Us, you should have cast Matt Berry as Joel."
The Fallout trailer is packed with Easter eggs
The Fallout series has been hyped as effectively being Fallout 5, but more than being your generic adaptation (sorry, Uncharted), Nolan and Joy look like they've crafted a world wholly faithful to the games. The trailer is packed full of Easter eggs and backstory, including showing Goggin's Cooper Howard before he becomes a Ghoul.
Elsewhere, you'll spot those adorable bobbleheads from the games, Shady Sands as the capital of the New California Republic and locale from the original game, and Aaron Moten's Maximus as part of the Brotherhood of Steel. Aside from Berry, the other big talking point is seeing the Power Armour in action.
It's fair to say we were treated to The Last of Us last year, and while we're disappointed Season 2 isn't coming until 2025, Fallout can scratch that video game itch for now. Here's hoping for a future where we alternate years between The Last of Us and Fallout - proving the video game curse is a thing of the past.
