NetEase and Marvel Games are squeezing into their spandex and calling on Earth's Mightiest Heroes, all as Marvel Rivals targets the shooter genre. This new team-based PvP game unveils an impressive roster of Marvel heroes and villains, boasting everyone from Groot to Black Panther, Scarlet Witch to Magik.
Bringing together a crack team of developers who've previously worked on the likes of Battlefield and Call of Duty, it's a break away from the usual narrative-based Marvel games you might be used to. Still, as Insomniac's Spider-Man games fly high, this is something a little different.
Avengers, assemble
Described as a fast-paced gameplay experience, Marvel Rivals offers 6v6 matches as you fight for victory across destructible environments. You can reshape terrain to gain a tactical advantage. It's hard to escape the Overwatch comparisons here, with Marvel Rivals applying our love of Marvel characters to the shooter staple.
In the trailer, we see Bruce Banner Hulk out while Doctor Strange soars above the battlefield. Banner teams up with Iron Man to take out an enemy vantage point, and elsewhere, Spider-Man takes out a squad with his webs. Fights take place in iconic locations including Asgard, Tokyo 2099, and more.
There's the interesting addition of Luna Snow from 2018's Marvel Future Fight game. This K-Pop mutant is sure to be a hit with fans and teases a more diverse roster than what you might normally expect from a Marvel game. Either way, we expect to see the lineup expand as the game develops.
Marvel Rivals is coming soon
Seasonal content is said to lean heavily into the Marvel Multiverse, with each drop adding new characters and diverse maps. You'll be able to unlock new content that can be used "across various gameplay strategies while experiencing thrilling action and endless possibilities in these adventurous team battles."
"We are overjoyed to bring Marvel Rivals to players around the world. We have always loved Marvel’s universe and its characters, and we are so excited to develop this game," said the Marvel Rivals Producer, Stephen Wu. "This is the game we want to make, and we feel very lucky to be the team who made all of this come true."
Jay Ong, Head of Marvel Games, added, "Marvel Rivals is one of our most ambitious game development projects. Since the conceptualization of the game and throughout our collaboration, our Marvel team has poured our hearts and souls into this project, and we are thrilled to work with the incredible team at NetEase Games to help deliver the ultimate Super Hero team-based PVP shooter."
Marvel Rivals' Closed Alpha is coming in May. The Alpha test will give us access to more than a dozen playable characters, highlighting big names like Magneto. Marvel Rivals is coming to PC, and in a slump of Overwatch content, it could clean up nicely.
