Pretend to be shocked - the new movie by the team behind Minions is doing well. Sarcasm aside, we knew in our hearts that The Super Mario Bros. Movie would be a box office banger. A
movie, made by an incredibly established studio, starring Hollywood's biggest stars, and following video games' most recognisable character means it was always going to pop off in the real world.
However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is making unprecedented moves, coursing towards being the most lucrative movie of the year. And now, it could be about to cross a massive milestone.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie expected to cross major box office milestone
After showing off the film's box office prowess, it looks like The Super Mario Bros. Movie could be about to cross that all-important blockbuster milestone to earn over a billion dollars worldwide.
The film is currently nearing $700 million at the box office, meaning The Hollywood Reporter predicts that it will breach the billion-dollar mark by the time its cinematic run is up. It'd join the very slim list of ten animated films to pass the milestone, topped by the remake of The Lion King and both of the Frozen films.
Away from animation, earning a cool billion means The Super Mario Bros. Movie would only be the third film to do it since the COVID-19 pandemic began - joining Spider-Man: Far From Home and Top Gun Maverick in strong company.
Impressively, Illumination's outing is already in top place art the domestic box office for 2023, overtaking Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in third and Avatar: The Way of Water in second.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn't even out in Japan
Even though The Super Mario Bros. Movie is doing insanely well, you'd think that Japanese audiences would go nuts for it all by themselves - but they still haven't had the chance to see it.
Mario's long-awaited cinematic return doesn't launch in Japan until April 28, so once that date passes, we're likely to see the box office numbers leap again. It's a positive start to what we're hearing could be a Mario Cinematic Universe.
There's no escaping the fact that Mario has dominated the cinema, and he's not willing to give up just yet. Not bad for our hopes of a sequel or that portly Brooklyn plumber.
