Video game adaptations are big business these days, and with everything from The Last of Us to Five Nights at Freddy's getting the live-action treatment, we've come a long way from Uwe Boll's House of the Dead. There are upcoming TV series and movies coming for the likes of God of War, The Sims, and more, but that's not all.
These days, as soon as a video game becomes a hit, there's the inevitable chat of when/if it'll get the big or small screen treatment. When it comes to FromSoftware's Elden Ring, it seems like it's only a matter of time until Hidetaka Miyazaki's dark fantasy gets the live-action treatment.
George R.R. Martin plays dumb about Elden Ring adaptation
George R.R. Martin might be best known for writing his A Song of Ice and Fire books and the live-action Game of Thrones adaptation that aired on HBO. However, that's not his only work. As well as penning books, including the Wild Cards anthology series, Martin helped FromSoftware with Elden Ring's worldbuilding.
Writing on his Not a Blog blog, Martin played dumb on the potential of an Elden Ring adaptation. "Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say," said the author.
While that might seem pretty cut and dry, there are questions about whether Martin is trolling us all. He concluded, "Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?" Martin's musings come after Miyazaki himself said he was open to the idea of an adaptation.
Thanks to the recent Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Elden Ring is everywhere again. We can only imagine how long it would take to get a live-action Elden Ring off the ground, but with Martin having crafted thousands of years of lore, there's more than enough backstory to explore instead of doing a straight-up retelling of the 2022 game.
Dark fantasy is equally as popular, and with House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power duking it out on TV, Peter Jackson is returning to Middle-earth for multiple The Lord of the Rings movies. There are obvious fears that Elden Ring is too big to adapt, but until someone tries, we'll never know.
