The road to the silver screen hasn't been easy for the Metal Gear franchise, and like its video game legacy had slipped into obscurity under Konami's reign, there are rightful worries we'll never see Solid Snake get the live-action movie he deserves.

While Metal Gear is facing something of a resurgence thanks to the Master Collection and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, its supposed big screen debut has yet to materialise. Considering Hideo Kojima first spoke about the idea in 2006, this is one that appears to be stuck in development hell.

Metal Gear Solid movie is still moving forward

Speaking to Brian Crecente on his Substack, producer Ari Arad gave us an update about where things are up to with the long-gestated project. Arad's work involves being a producer on the likes of Iron Man, Ghost in the Shell, Sony's Uncharted movie, and the upcoming Borderlands - meaning this wouldn't be his first video game adaptation.

As for the status of Metal Gear, Arad explained, "We're working on the script some more, but I can't talk about it yet. I think everyone's going to be really excited and surprised." It comes after Oscar Isaac was apparently attached and left, while Jurassic World's Derek Connolly reportedly took two goes at the script.

When asked whether he sees Metal Gear as the "pinnacle" of video games, Arad added, "I never thought about it like that. These are just movies I want to make as good as possible, you know? I think getting Metal Gear right will obviously be amazing because I think it's a lot more meditative than some of the other adaptations."

Expanding on why things might be going slower than we'd hoped, he concluded, "Personally, I want it to be terrific." Even though it's disappointing that the Metal Gear movie doesn't sound like it's suddenly going to get a surprise drop, at least Arad is committed to eventually releasing it.

Kong: Skull Island's Jordan Vogt-Roberts was once set to direct, while Kojima was originally working on the script. Unfortunately, the fact that the Metal Gear creator has since parted ways with Konami to set up Kojima Productions might've thrown a spanner in the works.

This is the latest update on where things are up to, and while it might not be the one you want to hear, there's still hope that a Metal Gear Solid movie can do the stealth series justice. For now, it joins everything from Gears of War to Ghost of Tsushima in live-action video game movies that are (supposedly) coming out.
