Kratos is ready to flex his muscles, as Amazon's live-action God of War series is finally taking a step forward. While HBO has its live-action The Last of Us, Amazon is snapping at its heels with the upcoming Fallout series and plans for a God of War adaptation.
After opinions were mixed on The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon has some making up to do. Thankfully, Fallout looks like a faithful retelling of Bethesda's apocalyptic adventure. Looking even further ahead, all eyes are sure to be on the God of War series, and again, an IP that fans are particularly protective of.
God of War series finally moving forward at Amazon
While a God of War movie was originally in the works as far back as 2005, our hopes of seeing Gerard Butler explore the scorched plains of Ancient Greece soon faded. The silver screen adaptation slipped into development hell, and while rumours persisted, we were surprised by the announcement of a God of War series in March 2022.
With such big news, you might things would've come quite far in the nearly two years since the God of War series was announced. Fimbulwinter has gripped the project in its icy grip, but At CES 2024, Sony gave an update on its God of War and Horizon TV shows - confirming writing is underway on both.
We know The Wheel of Time's Rafe Judkins is serving as God of War's showrunner, while The Expanse's Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are on board as writers, alongside God of War (2018) Game Director Cory Barlog as an Executive Producer.
Casting Kratos
Depending which era of the long-running God of War franchise we pull from completely depends on who could be cast. If we're going back to the old-school days of Greek mythology, we'll need a younger man to play the Ghost of Sparta. Go with the popular reboot series from 2018 and it opens the doors to an older crowd.
Hey, even Gerard Butler could still be in with a shot if we go for the God of War/Ragnarok era. Let's not forget Nick Offerman looks perfect as Kratos, and what about those rumours Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would be taking on the role? As long as it isn't Tom Holland playing Atreus, you'll be happy.
It would be wrong if we didn't mention Christopher Judge himself. Taking over from Terrence C. Carson for 2018's God of War, Judge has become synonymous with the character and seems willing to reprise the role for live-action - well, at least over Dave Bautista.
There are plenty of video game actors ready to draw back their bows, with Danielle Bisutti (Freya) and Sunny Suljić (Atreus) eager to return. With writing only just getting underway, we imagine it'll be a while until we hear about the cast, but still, you'd better start sharpening that Leviathan Axe.
