For years, no one dared challenge Call of Duty in the FPS genre, with Activision's shooter monopolising the idea and even bulldozing the likes of Battlefield and Gears of War into submission.

However, there are now a string of new studios that feature old CoD devs that are looking to overthrow Activision's franchise, or at least find a place in the market alongside them.

Now, some of the most iconic developers from Call of Duty and Apex Legends have formed another game studio and will look to work on a new shooter.

Former Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Titanfall Developers Launch New Game Studios

Former Call of Duty developer Chad Grenier has announced the formation of Wildlight Entertainment, as a new game studio that is "comprised of some of the most amazing developers from my previous time on CoD, Titanfall, and Apex Legends."

Grenier was one of the Respawn Entertainment founders working on Apex Legends, and before that, spent time on Call of Duty 1, 2, Modern Warfare 2 and more.

He created some of the most iconic missions in the franchise's history, such as "All Ghillied Up," "Crew Expendable," and "No Russian."

Wildlight Entertainment hasn't yet revealed its first project, but you can assume it will be in the FPS genre, with the developers' skill lists pointing in that direction.

The website claims that the developers are "hyper-focused on creating big, bold, original gaming universes of epic quality and scale".

Ex-Call of Duty Devs Are Flocking To New Studios

Wildlight Entertainment isn't the only new game studio littered with former CoD devs looking to usurp their former employers.

The most obvious two new studios with games in the works come in the way of Herschel "Dr Disrespect" Beahm's Midnight Society and its Deadrop title (Doc and Co-Founder Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling were both developers on Advanced Warfare and other CoD titles) and 100 Thieves' Project X.

Another stacked developer studio is Ubisoft's xDefinant division, which boasts former Infinity ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin and two-time CoD World Champion Patrick "Aches" Price.

The future for the shooter genre is quite strong, although each studio will be hoping to avoid slipping through the net like games such as Rogue Company and Hyperscape.
