If there's any one thing we can trust Mortal Kombat to be, it's violent. The game came onto the world stage almost entirely thanks to the fact that the violence and gore of its arcade cabinets were unlike anything that anyone had seen before, and the world definitely wasn't ready for it.
Fans loved the games regardless, and it seems that each new title topped itself with just how brutal it could be. This resulted in the hyper-detailed and gnarly fatalities we see in the modern titles. And now, it looks like the next entry in the series is certainly earning the legacy marker of Mortal Kombat and its gore.
Mortal Kombat has a minigame where you destroy a decapitated head
With every new instalment of Mortal Kombat, we wonder how it'll 1-up itself - and it looks like it's done so tenfold with a new minigame set to feature in Mortal Kombat 1.
A new report from the Singapore rating board (as transcribed by Twisted Voxel) has offered an insight into why it's chosen to set its age rating pretty high (much like every game in the series). It reveals that "the player may encounter a mini-game in certain game modes, where a decapitated head may be presented to the player character to destroy, in order to progress." Gnarly.
This level of gore is par for the course with the series, but for this to appear as a minigame is certainly interesting. It draws parallels to Street Fighter's recurring minigame in which you destroy a car, though we doubt the severed head will have the same kind of durability.
What else has given Mortal Kombat a high age rating?
Though the severed head alone has probably done a lot of the legwork for Mortal Kombat 1's high age rating, the report also indicates eye impalings, fractured bones, bursting internal organs, and more blood than you'll find in Stanley Kubrick's storage unit.
Say what you will about the cultural standing of Mortal Kombat amongst its legacy fighting game peers, but it's always able to deliver on that one beautiful thing, and that's never going to change. Mortal Kombat does what Mortal Kombat does best, meaning we'll never ask for anything more. Bring on the impalings.
