Oh great, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is playing Tom Nook for an Animal Crossing movie. We're obviously (we hope) kidding, but with news Hollywood's highest-paid actor has landed a role in a major video game adaptation, is it finally time for the Ghost of Sparta to flex his muscles?

Video game movies and shows are a dime a dozen these days, but with a resurgence thanks to the likes of Detective Pikachu and The Witcher, we're in something of a renaissance. You only have to look at upcoming outings like HBO's The Last of Us, Tom Holland's Uncharted, and the Mario movie to see its big business. Still, we're waiting for someone to pick up the Blades of Chaos for God of War.

Is The Rock Playing Kratos In God Of War?

In an interview with Men's Journal, the 49-year-old discussed all things Tinsel Town and hyped his upcoming comic book movie debut for Black Adam. The conversation then turned to what's next, where Johnson dropped something of a bombshell. The former wrestler confirmed he's landed a seemingly leading role in a big-budget video game adaptation.

"I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year," said The Rock. "We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen - one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends - but really we’re just going to make a great movie."

Since then, the doors have been thrown open to speculation. A lot of fingers have been pointed at a live-action Gears of War movie with Johnson as Marcus Fenix, but remember, Dave Bautista has already tried to pin his name to that one. Others have joked The Rock could once again return to DOOM after 2005's box office bomb.

A name that comes up time and time again is Kratos. Of course, there are other big names that continue to do the rounds. Casting Kratos is sure to be one of the hottest tickets in town, but away from Johnson, others like the aforementioned Bautista, Jason Momoa, and even John Cena get the fancast. Also, who could forget the legendary Nick Offerman as Kratos?

Is A God Of War Movie On The Way?

News that a God of War movie is on the way is much like the god and monsters Kratos has fought over the years - it's the stuff of legend. Still, there were reports that Sony was once eyeing a gritty and R-rated outing that could've brought Gerard Butler back to his 300 days as Kratos.

2022 is about to bring God of War back to the forefront of our minds thanks to the release of Ragnarok. The concluding chapter of the Norse mythology era is set to be an "all bets are off" kind of affair, while also reminding us why we need a live-action God of War. Then again, would a movie chart Kratos' Thor-hammering days or go back to the scored plains of Ancient Greece?

None of this really matters anyway, because the gods themselves are yet to give God of War the official nod. The new Predator movie will be inspired by God of War, but where's Kratos' actual time to shine? Whether we can smell what The Rock is cooking remains to be seen. Either way, we can think of worse choices to play Kratos.
