2023 is the year that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 finally comes swinging into our lives, soaring across the New York City skyline as the long-awaited sequel to 2018's Spider-Man from Insomniac Games.

While this is our first full-blown sequel, remember there was the Christmas-themed Miles Morales in 2020. There's been a lot of talk about a supposed Marvel Gaming Universe, and while it hasn't happened yet, could Camouflaj's Iron Man VR be secretly connected to Insomniac's world?

Is Iron Man VR A Secret Spider-Man Game?

As much as we'd love the idea of a fully formed MGU, we've learned that just slapping the prefix Marvel's on a game doesn't connect titles together. We've seen this with Spider-ManAvengersGuardians of the Galaxy, and Midnight Suns - which has sometimes been for the best.

It's probably for the best that Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers doesn't tarnish the good work of Insomniac's Spider-Man, but when it comes to Iron Man VR, the pair are more connected than we first thought.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Marvel Games Head Bill Rosemann and Writer Brendan Murphy discussed the release of Marvel's Iron Man VR for Meta Quest 2. "It's a little above my pay grade, but I will say when we were developing the game, it was being worked on after the success of Insomniac's Spider-Man." said Murphy.

"We were working with the same folks over at Marvel and there were little Easter egg kind of things that existed in Spider-Man that we were able to put in our game." As for the "MGU," he added, "I don't know, there's not necessarily a larger plan for that. But yeah, there are some Easter eggs in our game that speak to what happens in Spider-Man."

Rosemann added, "People know each other... they work together. Or sometimes we're like 'Hey, do you need a logo for Roxxon or the Daily Bugle?' Here's one we created or have from the comics or this other game has and 'Are we cool with working together?'"

While each game stands on its own, Rosemann concluded, "If you're playing and you want to see connections, you can. There's a scene in Guardians where you hear things, but I like to say that's the multiverse coming through. That's how I approach it, if you want to call it the Marvel Games Omniverse, the MGO. Each game is its own reality."

How Are Iron Man VR And Spider-Man Connected?

When Iron Man VR launched amidst the pandemic in 2020, it largely flew under the radar. Then again, looking at the critical panning Marvel's Avengers received, that's not the world's worst thing. Still, there's plenty connecting it to Spider-Man

As Tony Stark flies past an Oscorp building in Shanghai, he talks about Norman Osborn expanding his empire beyond the USA. He also says about New York having Osborn on thin ice, which coupled with a tablet in Stark's garage talking about controversial gene therapy, sounds a lot like the Devil's Breath incident from Spider-Man

For whatever reason, Rosemann has stopped short of crafting a cohesive MGU. However, with a tonne of Marvel games on the way - and Insomniac also working on its mysterious Wolverine game - there are sure to be more of these Easter eggs popping up.

You only have to look at the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how far it's come in terms of Easter eggs and interconnected stories to see weaving this complicated web is no easy feat. Still, we're hoping that someone gives Insomniac the reins and we get a Daredevil game
