Mortal Kombat 1 has been hyping up its guest fighters for some time now, and for long enough that gaming fans on the outside of Mortal Kombat’s ongoing hype train would have presumed they’d be out already.
Besides, it wasn’t soon after the launch of the reboot that it was revealed that Omni-Man, Peacemaker and Homelander would be joining some series greats in the game’s first fighter pack, and it feels like we’ve waited some time for more info. It seems, too, that NetherRealm knows it’s saving the best until last as players beg for a new look at the appearance of Homelander, appearing first in the Prime Video series The Boys.
And now, it looks like fans are getting just what they want. Even if it makes their skin crawl a bit.
Mortal Kombat 1 shows off Homelander gameplay
Mortal Kombat 1 has offered fans their first proper look at how Homelander operates in the game, and it’s about as icky as you’d expect. Our first look at the character is his outro clip, which sees him enjoying a bottle of milk far too much in reference to the grim moment from The Boys, before he launches into battle.
He claims himself a God, acts on the offensive and fires lasers from his eyes at his foe with some gnarly rage. We get a look at the character’s fatalities too, firing lasers through an enemy’s head, and launching them into the sky to be swept by a passenger plane.
It’s about as gory and grim as you’d expect for fans - but some are still relatively disappointed by Homelander’s appearance, mostly due to the fact that Homelander himself isn’t present.
Antony Starr won’t be playing Homelander in MK1 - and fans are hurt
The reveal trailer for the character has been exciting for many, but players haven’t been quick to forget that Antony Starr, the face of Homelander and actor of the supervillain in The Boys, is not voicing the character despite his interest in getting involved.
We still don’t know quite why Starr isn’t attached to the project, but it has clearly rubbed players the wrong way. Homelander is here, but he isn’t - even if the laser eyes burrowing into our skulls feel pretty real.
