In the world of live service games, a content roadmap is almost always laid out by the developers - giving players an idea of what new features are on the way. However, following the release of The FINALS, fans noticed that Embark Studios had opted to avoid this common tactic.

After being asked about the topic, the devs have explained why they have decided to avoid releasing a roadmap. While the answer will disappoint some fans, it shows Embark is putting the community first and wants to manage expectations.

Speaking to Axios, The FINALS Creative Director Gustav Tilleby was asked why the game doesn't have a roadmap that outlines the title's future plans.

"We better hold off with that sort of stuff and make promises we can keep," said Tilleby, making it clear the team don't want to disappoint the playerbase by setting expectations too high.

This makes sense, as we've seen a lot of live service titles promise content at release, only for it to be cancelled or pushed back to a later date.

It often results in frustration from fans and backlash towards the devs. By adopting this strategy, Embark can surprise players with fresh content and keep them on their toes.

Will The FINALS ever have a roadmap?

Tilleby only mentions that a roadmap will not be coming to The FINALS "for now," indicating that one might arrive in the future.

It's possible the devs want to hold back until they've ironed out all the issues from launch and the fundamental gameplay is completely stable.

This will give them the freedom to focus solely on future updates, and then, they may feel comfortable enough to finally release a roadmap.

Of course, there's always a chance The FINALS team chooses to avoid this strategy completely. Keeping fans in the dark until the last minute certainly means the content is more exciting when it drops.
