While it looks like those rumours of the next Grand Theft Auto dropping in 2023 have turned out to be false (what a surprise), all eyes are on 2024 to see whether it's the year we'll finally get to revisit the automotive adventure. Now, a GTA 6 rating leak has us optimistic about an update but worried about its content.
The long-running GTA series has evolved a lot from its top-down days, with 2013's GTA V being the most profitable entertainment product of all time. Rockstar's series has constantly skirted controversy with its depictions of violence, foul language, and drug use, but will the next outing be toned down?
GTA 6 rating has fans concerned
As spotted on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, a GTA 6 rating has popped up on the Australian Age Rating Board, slapping the game with an MA15+ rating. It's interesting to note this is dated as April 2, 2023, suggesting it's been here for a few months.
The description reads, "Strong Sex Scenes and Strong Drug Use," which fits with previous entries, but there are worries that this listing only has GTA 6 rated as MA15+. Given the series' graphic content and the likes of GTA V being rated R18+, some are concerned the signature style of GTA is being watered down.
This comes after there were complaints a "woke" culture would hold back GTA 6. Bloomberg claimed GTA 6 was being downscaled and was going to avoid its previous frat boy culture by trying not to "punch down" on minorities. Personally, we don't see GTA 6 being an MA15+ game.
Is the GTA 6 leak good news for the game?
The big takeaway from the potential rating leak is that we're edging closer to release. With it being a decade since GTA V released, that's not exactly hard. Ratings tend to come toward the end of a game's development life cycle, with optimistic theorists jumping on the idea that Rockstar is about to finally unveil when GTA 6 will launch.
The rating has thrown fuel on the fire that we'll get a shadow drop of the next game, but at this point, we don't know what to believe. Also, we've had our hopes dashed so many times - even using the Moon to try and predict the GTA 6 launch - we'll probably wait for official word.
Then again, sceptics are more than valid in their worries that the Australian Age Rating Board is just a placeholder. Erring on the side of caution, this seems like the likeliest opportunity. With notable insiders claiming we're getting a big reveal before the end of October, it's back to staying alert every hour of the day.
