Ghost of Tsushima on Steam won't need a PSN account for single-player, but it's not all good news

Fresh off of the Helldivers 2 controversy that saw Sony backtrack, Sucker Punch reveals you'll need a PSN account for multiplayer in Ghost of Tsushima.

Sony's plan to bring its big hitters to PC was going so well, but last week's Helldivers 2 controversy certainly soured the operation for many.

The planned rollout of a mandatory PlayStation account linking process, which could make the game unavailable in many locations has been scrapped by PlayStation after no small amount of backlash, but it appears it's not quite over just yet as another PlayStation title prepares for a Steam launch.

Ghost of Tsushima on PC requires a PSN account for multiplayer

Sony's next big PC launch is Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, which launches on May 16 along with a new PlayStation overlay which will finally incorporate trophies.

As it happens, though, you'll need to use a PlayStation account to use the overlay, and seemingly to collect trophies. If you're looking to play multiplayer via the Legends mode which arrived as a free update for players back in 2020, you'll need to connect to a PlayStation account, too.

Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from a user claiming to have cancelled their pre-order, the Sucker Punch Productions account said "Thank you for your feedback".

"Just so you are aware, A PSN account is required for Legends online multiplayer mode and to use PlayStation overlay. It is not required to play the singleplayer game."

That means that you can enjoy Jin Sakai's full adventure solo, without trophies, without needing to log into your PSN account, but anything further will require account linking.

Given that the tweet is from May 3 and Sony has since rolled back the requirements for Helldivers 2 account linking, it remains to be seen whether this will still be the case, at least for Legends - but it seems a fair bet to expect trophies for PlayStation to link to a PlayStation account after all.
