Forget Sparking Zero, one of my favourite Dragon Ball Z games just hit PS5 and Xbox Series X

It may have launched in 2016, but Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is finally getting a port for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S - and you should jump in.

Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero is coming, but if you're looking for an ambitious arena fighter set in the late Akira Toriyama's most iconic universe, there's good news.

Earlier this week, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, the 2016 action RPG/fighting game got a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S port that's well worth looking into for fans of the series. In fact, it's probably my favourite Dragon Ball game (and I loved FighterZ).

Piccolo in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

Xenoverse 2 launched all the way back in 2016, and has players step into the shoes of a Time Patroller, a custom character tasked with repairing the timeline after an interloper starts changing the course of time.

That means, in pretty standard DBZ game fashion, you're sent through space and time to moments like helping Goku defeat Raditz, taking on Great Ape Vegeta, and much more.

What makes this more special is that Xenoverse 2 is an impressively flexible fighter. You can jump into fights as the likes of Goku, Trunks, Gohan, Beerus and plenty more, but you'll also be able to take on any of them as your created character.

My favourite part, though, is you can explore a pretty sizeable Conton City, learning moves from classic Dragon Ball Z characters to then take into your next mission.

It's the closest gaming has come to bringing the colourful world to life, as you fly through the air to learn fresh new techniques, before jumping into multiplayer battles, and even PvE raid content that helps you power up. Taking your own Saiyan and learning to go Super Saiyan and beyond is pure fan service.

if you already own Xenoverse 2, you can grab a free upgrade to the PS5 version from PS4 and the Series X|S version from Xbox One, drastically cutting down on the game's loading times, improving the visuals, and getting the framerate to 60FPS.

Future Saga Chapter 1 DLC arrives, too

There's a new DLC that arrived this week, too, adding the following as playable characters:

  • Goku Black (Super Saiyan Rosé, Ultra Supervillain)
  • Vegeta (Super Saiyan God, Ultra Supervillain)
  • Videl (Dragon Ball Super)
  • Android 18 (Dragon Ball Super)
  • Broly (Restrained)

You'll also find new quests and items to unlock for your character. Honestly, I've played Xenoverse 2 on the Switch and had a great time, but with these upgrades, I think I may have to pick up the PS5 version instead to tide me over until Sparking! Zero.
