Mortal Kombat's next chapter has been teased for some time now. Well, that's if you can count Ed Boon's tweets as teases. The NetherRealm boss turns to fans for advice when it comes to preparing for the next entries in the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises, which is refreshing for a major gaming company.
Now (after years of waiting), we're finally getting what looks to be our first Mortal Kombat 12 teaser. And it's… vague. Really vague. Good luck deciphering this one.
Mortal Kombat 12 is teased with… sand
That's pretty unhelpful. A first Mortal Kombat 12 teaser might've been covertly dropped by NetherRealm, and even though that comes with plenty of excitement, try to contain it for now. If it can even be considered a teaser, it's one that comes across as a dastardly riddle.
Following on from the narrative of Mortal Kombat 11 - which saw an hourglass that has the potential to reset time - it looks like its next title will be continuing that story. The teaser comes as part of a video that is designed to thank fans for helping to make the series the success that it is.
The video ends with a farewell from the team, with Ed Boon saying, "We're not quite done yet," before cutting to some CGI footage of hyper-realistic sand falling, exploding into the visage of a universe. Sick.
What does the Mortal Kombat 12 teaser mean?
Pros and casual players alike are suitably stumped. MK11 ended with Kronika using the powers of her magical hourglass to create a series of alternate timelines where the franchise's villains ruled supreme.
Liu Kang with a reformed Shang Tsung to defeat Kronika, although they then fought for the hourglass themselves in the Aftermath DLC. Despite there being two different endings, the MK12 teaser implies we're about to push reset on the brutal brawler.
This short teaser seems to indicate that there's a whole new universe of characters to explore in Mortal Kombat 12, maybe even hinting that we could be getting some bizarre multiverse antics - but only time will tell what we're in for.
The fact that the teaser was shovelled into a thank you video seems to suggest that it's our only teaser for a while - but knowing that a new MK game is on the way is all we need to fuel our hype. You've piqued our interest, Mr Boon, well done.
