For PlayStation fans, there are a lot of downsides to the looming Activision Blizzard deal. For others, there's the upside that some forgotten franchises could be brought back from the depths of development hell.
Once upon a time, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon helped define the PS1 era, and while they've since lost their Sony exclusivity, there are hopes Activision could resurrect the latter in a big way. Now, players have spotted a potential tease of Spyro 4.
What is the Spyro 4 tease?
2023 is a big year for Spyro the Dragon, as it'll mark 25 years since that purple prince took flight. In January, developer Toys for Bob wrote "Big moves and BIG MOOD for 2023 #LifeatTFB" on Twitter and shared a picture of Spyro alongside the number 25.
As spotted by @SpyroUniverse on Twitter, Activision has added Spyro back into its banner and fanned the flames of Spyro 4. Although there are a number of legacy Activision franchises in the banner, bear with us on this one.
The other series include Pro Skater, Crash Bandicoot, and Call of Duty. Remember the remastered Pro Skater 1 + 2 released in 2020, Crash Team Rumble is just over the horizon, and Call of Duty is (obviously) everywhere). Considering Spyro Reignited Trilogy is five years old, Spyro is the odd one out here.
This potential tease set the Twitterverse alight, as one fan gushed, "Any news from our purple boy soon?" Another added, "Pleeeeeaseee can we get one crumb of Spyro Content," while a third said, "If we don't get an announcement, I'm gonna cry. I need my purple boi to star in a new game."
What's going on with Spyro?
Under the steam of a pre-Marvel's Spider-Man Insomniac Games, Spyro the Dragon was a huge hit for Sony. Much like how Crash fell off after its original trilogy, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly wasn't the hit it was supposed to be on PS2 and GameCube in 2002.
Similar to Ratchet & Clank, there have been attempts at reboots and requels that have become lost in their own complicated lore. 2018's Spyro Reignited Trilogy saw Toys for Bob continue its winning streak from Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and reminded us why we love that daring dragon.
Sadly, while Crash moved forward with Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Spyro Reignited Trilogy failed to "reignite" the flames beneath the franchise. There have been whispers of Spyro 4 for ages, but with Summer Game Fest flying into view, we hope he'll go full Daenerys Targaryen to set the showcase on fire.
