Fallout 5 fans are looking ahead at the next entry in the franchise and are asking for more customisation to play as Ghouls, Super Mutants, and Androids in the game.

By the time the next Fallout game releases, chances are most of us will look like Ghouls anyway. Bethesda has already warned us that Fallout 5 is likely years away, with efforts focusing on Starfield and eventually shifting over to The Elder Scrolls 6.

Fallout 4 faced plenty of criticisms when it was released back in 2015, but as things continue to evolve with mods, and we get massive fan projects like Fallout London, it's good news that fans are still keeping the Wasteland ticking along. Still, that won't stop some of us from looking ahead at what comes next.

Fallout 4 upped the ante in terms of character customisation, and following in the footsteps of The Sims, let you fully tweak your appearance to make your Vault-Dweller in your likeness. Given how the likes of Baldur's Gate 3 and Dragon's Dogma 2 put Fallout 4 to shame, we're expecting a much more advanced version next time around.

Long before Fallout 4 even released, there had been grumbles that we've never been able to play as the various monsters and madmen who populate the Wasteland - trapping us in the shell of a generic Vault-Dweller. Over on Reddit, players have been asking for the ability to play as Ghouls, Super Mutants, Androids, and more.

Responding to the OP asking if we'd want to play as Ghouls, one supporter said, "It'd be cool if the start of the game something happens and the outcome results in you being human, ghoul, super Mutant or droid. Then NPCs react differently to each possibility with some quests playing differently or being opened or closed to you based on it."

Another added, "I think it'd be chill to see life as a Ghoul, honestly. Heck, have him/her be a rando explorer who finds an empty vault, and a mystery/story come from that. Why is it always the bog standard Vault Dweller leave the vault and its a 'strange new world'?"

Not everyone was a fan, as someone else said, "I used to think it would be cool but it would severely limit the logical choices you could make. Basically no BOS, NCR, Cesar's legion, Institute etc. It would have to be very tailor made and that could mess up the story."

Variety is the spice of life

Of course, there are a slew of mods out there that let you play as Ghouls or Super Mutants. Nexus Mods is full of cosmetic packs, which largely alleviate those complaints that you'd be an OP Ghoul. Still, there's an argument to be made for a more complex system where different species would come with different perks and drawbacks.

Games like The Elder Scrolls have shown it's possible to turn into a vampire or werewolf - as well as starting as different races like Khajiit - there's potential for Fallout to mix things up next time around. Sadly, with The Elder Scrolls 6 still a long way off, it sometimes feels like we're never going to open the vaults of Fallout 5.
