Becoming a global hit seemingly overnight, Fall Guys is the game we all needed during quarantine. Now, just 22 days after its release, Fall Guys has hit another unimaginable milestone. Today PlayStation announced that Fall Guys is the most downloaded PS Plus game of all time on a global basis, with the cutesy battle royale also passing seven million units on Steam.
This news means the vibrant indie game has surpassed blockbuster giants like The Last Of Us: Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Titanfall 2, Bloodborne, and even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered - which is on PS Plus alongside Fall Guys this month. Who'd have thought that Mediatonic's tiny game would come out on top among a market of multi-million dollar franchises?
The unprecedented success of Fall Guys is reminiscent of Rocket League’s explosive PS Plus release in 2015, but Twitch has taken it to a whole new level. On Twitch, Fall Guys quickly shot past Fortnite to become the most viewed battle-royale game, but it didn’t stop there. Shortly after, it dethroned League of Legends as the most-viewed game on Twitch. The biggest names like shroud and even rapper-turned-streamer Logic have been enjoying the party game. Finally, "TimTheTatman" and his struggle for a win earned him some insane viewership numbers.
The huge demand for Fall Guys has brought it into the esports conversation, with the first Fall Guys Twitch Rivals event going ahead on August 28th. Even established organisations want a piece of the action, with Panda Global being the first to create a professional Fall Guys roster. While no one is really sure how an esport version of the game would work, the Twitch statistics have certainly shown there’s a huge audience for it.
As the game continues to evolve, we’ll have to wait and see if Fall Guys can turn its initial boom into a sustainable casual and esports scene like Rocket League, or if it will fade out of the spotlight as quickly as it appeared.
