Can you pause, can you not pause? This has become the question of FromSoftware's Elden Ring. When you're five hours in and daren't leave your seat for fear of being run down by a rogue sheep or hungry jade goblin, you'll be praying for a pause option. Sadly, that just wouldn't be a FromSoft game, would it?
Trust us, things will only get worse. When you're in a mammoth playthrough and Shardbreaker Godrick continues to kick your ass as your eyes start to bleed, the concept of a pause screen will feel like the sweet escape of death. While we've repeatedly been told Elden Ring doesn't have a pause option, that's not necessarily the case.
Can You Pause Elden Ring?
Over on Twitter, @IronPineapple_ has gone viral for discovering you can access a secret pause menu in Elden Ring. To do this, simply open the inventory and open "menu explanation" - voila, you're free to pause at your leisure and return to normal habits instead of peeing in a bottle.
Supporters loved the pause function. Someone cheered: "I understand not pausing when connected online but it's dumb that you can't pause offline. It's not a unique or hardcore feature it's just fucking stupid. Sorry people have real lives that can cause something to happen." Not everyone was a fan though, as one critic concluded: "That's a lot of effort to try to force a game to bend to your will. Like bro, just deal with the creators' vision instead of wanting to change it. Art isn't democracy."
Remembering that FromSoft specifically said you wouldn't be able to pause, it's a confusing state of affairs Given that this is a Souls-like entry, the inability to pause is much like gruelling difficulty - you just come to accept it. Then again, we imagine now this workaround is out in the wild, the devs will try and patch it out.
Are There Other Ways To Pause Elden Ring?
We've previously covered how you can pause Elden Ring if you own the game on PC. As with any PC release, it didn't take long for Nexus Mods to be filled with mods that can spruce up the Lands Between, add some handy gameplay features, or maybe just Thomas the Tank Engine. The problem with the Elden Ring pause mod is that unfreezing would lead to a stutter effect that could get you killed.
Also, remember that modding Elden Ring involves disabling anti-cheat - which could also see you slapped with the ban hammer. Apparently, the pause workaround works on console and PC, so for the time being, you can pause until your heart's content and live your normal humanoid lives away from wyverns and that annoying Burger King guy.
