"What do we say to the God of Death?" Well, if you're playing Elden Ring, chances are you don't get to say anything to the God of Death - you're busy being impaled, filleted, or kicked off a cliff by that b*stard Patches. Death is everyone in Elden Ring, and as our retinas are burned with the words "You Died", the game's Director couldn't be happier.
Since the birth of the Souls and Souls-like genre with Demon's Souls in 2009, FromSoftware has cemented itself as one of the most bloodthirsty developers in the realm. Alongside back-breaking difficulty and an inability to pause, FromSoft games have become known for their imaginative deaths. It's good news for Elden Ring, because it happens... a lot.
Is Dying Fun In Elden Ring?
Speaking to The New Yorker, Director Hidetaka Miyazaki said he tried to make dying enjoyable in Elden Ring. "I’ve never been a very skilled player," said Miyazaki. "I die a lot. So, in my work, I want to answer the question: If death is to be more than a mark of failure, how do I give it meaning? How do I make death enjoyable?"
Over on Twitter @DuncstarTV claims that he dies every 5.75 minutes, meaning you're going to be seeing the death screen a lot. Still, with Game of Thrones' George R.R. Martin lending a hand in world-building, you can bet there are some hilarious ways to die out there in the Lands Between.
Whether it's being devoured inside a statue or ensnared by Spider Hands, our personal favourite was the person that posted their untimely demise to Reddit. Redditor u/ArielRosado shared footage when one of those Burker King mascot guys (actually called Raya Lucaria Sorcerors) smacked them on the head with a book so hard, it severed the PlayStation Network connection.
Is Elden Ring Too Hard?
Yes, we're once again returning to the issue of difficulty in Elden Ring. Despite loosely apologising for Elden Ring's difficulty, Miyazaki says it isn't going to change anytime soon, with the man himself admitting: "We are always looking to improve, but, in our games specifically, hardship is what gives meaning to the experience. So it’s not something we’re willing to abandon at the moment. It’s our identity."
The internet is currently full of lengthy videos of dramatic deaths, with one streamer spending seven hours trying to beat the early Tree Sentinel boss just because they wanted to prove they could at their current level. Of course, most of us just ran around them and returned later to best the boss. Dying might not sound like a whole lot of fun, but we've got to hand it to Elden Ring, you've at least made it interesting.
