Cyberpunk 2077 Is Back From The Dead

CD Projekt Red's divisive Cyberpunk 2077 is finally bouncing back, as its player numbers have skyrocketed and brought it back into the charts.

There are a lot of words for the downfall of Cyberpunk 2077. Catastrophic. Biblical. Iconic. The way that the sci-fi shooter was meant to be the start of a brand-new era for RPGs on next-gen consoles, and then flubbed the landing with more bugs and glitches than lines of dialogue (and there are a lot of lines of dialogue).

Ever since, CD PROJEKT RED has been playing clean-up and trying to salvage the game from the brink with updates and fixes, all the while trying to remedy the cultural standing of the IP with the popular new anime series Edgerunners. Bizarrely, it's working, and it's working well.

How Many People Are Playing Cyberpunk 2077 In 2022?

It looks like players aren't done with Night City just yet. Cyberpunk 2077 is now reporting its highest player numbers since January 2021, with 78,385 players playing the game at one point yesterday (September 19) on Steam alone.

It gets better, though, as 16:00 on Sunday September 18 saw a concurrent player number of 85,555 players at once too. This is the highest that player numbers have been in some time, and the numbers seem to be a cocktail result of the constant updates offered to the game and the new success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

This is certainly a result for CD PROJEKT RED, which has fought for a No Man's Sky comeback ever since launch. For those who've stuck with Cyberpunk 2077, it actually seems like it might be paying off. Plus, with new DLC on the horizon, it's about to get even better for the team.

When Is The Cyberpunk DLC Coming Out?

The upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 could be about to make player numbers even more fruitful for the team, but we're going to have to wait for its release first. The DLC, which brings with it the long-awaited return of Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, is set for a 2023 release. Sadly, there's no specific date or release window offered just yet.

So, we could be waiting some time for more Cyberpunk 2077 - but right now, it's not looking like players need it, as they're coming back to the game even without it. The redemption arc of the game isn't something we expected, but it's something we're very glad to see indeed. Welcome back, V.
