Konami may be porting classic Silent Hill games to contemporary consoles after a short documentary teased that it was something that had been considered.

This wouldn’t be the first time that some of the games have been ported, however the previous attempt on older consoles was not generally well-received.

Silent Hill ports could be coming to modern consoles

Alongside the release of The Short Message, Konami dropped five ini-documentaries about Silent Hill on YouTube.

In the fourth documentary, which centred around an interview that was recorded in November 2022, level design director Rika Miyatani shared that there had previously been discussion about porting the original games.

Miyatani said: “A few years ago, Konami had actually reached out to us about potentially porting the Silent Hill series.

“Everyone, including myself, who were part of that discussion were big Silent Hill fans, so internally, people started talking, and we said, ports would be nice too, but what we'd really like to see is a Silent Hill remade for current-gen consoles."

It is now known that Mutatani’s employer Hexadrive was not selected for the remake, with Bloober Team being chosen to work on it instead, however the team was contacted months later and asked to work on The Short Message instead.

There has not been any further discussion or confirmation that we are aware of regarding ports, however the fact that that information made it into the documentary is promising in itself.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Silent Hill has tried to come to modern consoles

Back in 2012, Konami released the Silent Hill HD Collection, which brought Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

This did not turn out especially well however, as missing source code and re-recorded voice work led to mixed reviews, uncanny visuals, and occasionally bad framerate.

Silent Hill 2 is also currently being remade for PC and PlayStation 5, however there is not currently an easy way to play the classic games in all their original glory.

Nothing has been officially confirmed as far as Silent Hill coming to next gen consoles, however the idea made its way into the official mini-documentary so that has to count for something.

Whether or not the ports are ever made, it would be great fun to be able to re-experience the original Silent Hill on newer consoles.
