Acquisitions are all the rage in modern gaming, with companies like Microsoft spearheading the movement to gobble up studios both big and small, ranging from titans like Activision Blizzard, to the little guys like Obsidian Entertainment.
But if there's one company that Microsoft won't be using its titanic wealth to acquire, it's the Japanese studio Capcom, which would 'gracefully decline' such an offer.
Capcom aren't in the business of selling
In a Bloomberg interview during the Tokyo Game Show over the weekend, Capcom COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto shut down any ideas of the company being bought out or acquired.
After being asked if Capcom would entertain Microsoft approaching it for an acquisition offer, Tusjimoto stated, "I would gracefully decline the offer because I believe it would be better if we were equal partners."
Tsujimoto also revealed at one point that Capcom was a target for an outside acquisition, though he didn't specify who was looking to buy it.
This may not be too much of a surprise for those who follow the company, as the previous fiscal year was its best period ever, selling a total of 41.7 million games thanks to the launch of the Resident Evil 4 Remake and the Monster Hunter Rise expansion Sunbreak.
Will Capcom look to acquire other studios?
While Capcom is firm in keeping its independence, what about using its new wealth of funds to purchase others?
In the same interview, when asked about Capcom's thoughts on mergers and acquisitions in the industry, Tsujimoto said "rather than acquiring an outside company, we prefer organic growth."
He continued, "I also believe we can utilise external partners, but we have no intention of acquiring companies."
It's a refreshing stance to hear in an industry that's becoming increasingly narrow as a few giant companies look to consolidate their power, but the winds change extremely quickly in business, and who knows if Capcom's higher-ups will share the same sentiment a few years from now.
However, it's good to see that gamers can continue to play the major Capcom franchises like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter on all platforms for the foreseeable future.
