Albert, get your shades because it looks like Capcom could be prepping for some big Resident Evil news. While it makes sense that a Resident Evil 5 remake is next on the Capcom calendar, we'll have to act surprised when the developer eventually announces it.

2023's Resident Evil 4 Remake cleverly teased a RE5 remake, and more than it just being next chronologically, the game's post-credit scene did some pretty heavy lifting to set one up. However, as we get closer to the modern era of the Resiverse, there are concerns about how Capcom will adapt the 2009 game.

Resident Evil 5 remake teased by Steam updates

As pointed out by Tech4Gamers, a series of Steam updates to Resident Evil 5 point toward some interesting changes behind the scenes. The name and date of Resident Evil 5 have been removed, which has left players stumped. However, there could be an important reason.

Resident Evil 5 apparently hasn't received a Steam update for three years, but was surprisingly given these updates to coinincide with the release. of the Resident Evil 4 Remake Gold Edition. The original Resident Evil 4 received similar updates before the RE4 Remake was revealed.

The original Resident Evil 4 was later renamed as Resident Evil 4 (2005), while the remake was simply labelled as Resident Evil 4. If RE5 gets the same treatment, the date might've been removed in preparation for it being renamed Resident Evil 5 (2009).

Resident Evil 5 is make or break for the Resiverse

While Capcom has enjoyed great success with its Resident Evil remakes, they're relatively new to the scene. Yes, we know the 2002 GameCube REmake of the original game was a huge hit, but aside from HD revamps of later entries, we had to wait until 2019's Resident Evil 2 remake to see what Capcom could really do.

Resident Evil 5 hasn't exactly aged well, with critiques that it's an African-based rehash of RE4 being just the start of its problems. Namely, Resident Evil 5 has been called out for its racial stereotypes, which will arguably be its biggest hurdle to overcome in a modern remake.

Still, with reports that Capcom has at least five Resident Evil games currently in development, we can't imagine a scenario where Resident Evil 5 isn't one of them. Capcom's slate for 2024 and 2025 is currently a little thin, so what better way to celebrate than the surprise announcement of an RE5 Remake? Come on, it's time to release Uroboros onto the world.
