We all had to act surprised when the Call of Duty x Fallout crossover was announced, and like with most things CoD, the surprise was spoiled well ahead of time. As the 'Fortnitification; of Call of Duty continues, we've seen everything from Warhammer 40k to Tomb Raider, The Boys to Crash Bandicoot jump into battle.
In early May, we covered leaks that suggested a Call of Duty x Fallout collab was on the way to Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone. Leakers were on the money that Price and Ghost would be getting Vault Dweller-inspired outfits, but with the hard-to-please CoD community less than impressed, it seems you were expecting more.
Call of Duty x Fallout crossover takes us into the Wasteland
Call of Duty's Fallout crossover is now official, with Activision sharing an extensive blog post on what's coming. Task Force 141 has been released from Vault 141 (yes, very clever) and is coming to both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone via the Tracer Pack: Fallout Vault Dweller Bundle.
Boasting over 15 items, the Tracer Pack: Fallout Vault Dweller bundle will be released on June 20, with a special Vault Dwellers Event running from June 20 until June 26. Alongside Operator skins for Price, Ghost, Soap and Gaz, you can unlock the Vault-Tec Approved M16 Weapon Blueprint and Atomic Disintegrator HRM-9 Weapon Blueprint.
There are a range of unique loading screens, while the Fallout: Vault Dwellers Event features an extra XP boost when using the new skins, as well as Fallout-themed cosmetics, including the "New California Republic" Large Decal, "Nuka-Cola Caps" Emblem, "Slocum's Joe" Sticker, "Nuka-Cola" Charm, and "Nuka-Cola Quantum" Weapon Camo.
Fallout fans aren't happy
You might've noticed a missing part of the Fallout franchise, as the iconic Power Armor is not mentioned. Given that Fortnite's own Fallout crossover has made a big deal out of including the outfit, it seems CoD is missing a trick here. Safe to say, we aren't alone in our grumblings.
Over on the Fallout subreddit, disgruntled gamers moaned that the Call of Duty crossover doesn't do the apocalyptic IP justice. One unhappy camper said, "Out of all the ways I could imagine doing a fallout crossover, vault suits and blue/yellow skins is the most uninspired way to go."
Another added, "They could have at least had some sort of combat armor with vault coloring or the vault suits with armor over them. They just look so boring," while a third said, "First thing I do in Fallout is to try and find any other things to wear than the vault suit. This doesn't inspire me to play Call of Duty."
When someone said, "Wow they did the bare minimum," one critic concluded, "It's the CoD way!" Fortunately for Activision, it doesn't have to worry about these things because the Fallout Vault Dweller Bundle is sure to earn some serious bottle caps.
You don't get much bigger than Fallout in gaming, and with it now sitting alongside Call of Duty under Microsoft's stewardship, we're sure the crossover will be extra popular with Xbox fans. We're not sure why there's no Fallout-themed Juggernaut, but alas, this seems like another lacklustre CoD crossover.
