Call of Duty’s latest resurrection is a step too far for fans

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Season 5 has confirmed that Ivan Alexxeve is returning, but with him presumed dead from a bullet to the head, fans are unimpressed with his resurrection.

It seems like only yesterday that we were writing about how Call of Duty has a problem with letting go...and that's because it was. The CoDverse is gearing up for the release of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone Season 5 on July 24, and in classic CoD style, there's a not-so-shocking character return.

We've already covered how Season 5 is bringing back everyone's favourite 'mommy,' with the antagonistic Valeria leading her second season. It seems that Val isn't the only blast from the past making her presence felt, with Season 5 bizarrely bringing back Ivan Alexxeve. The problem is, he's supposed to be dead.

Call of Duty Season 5 brings Ivan Alexxeve back from the dead

Giving Ivan the Phillip Graves treatment, Season 5 has confirmed that the former Konni leader is somehow back in action. We all witnessed Ivan's grim demise when he was shot in the head by Andrei Nolan with an X12. That should be a definitive way to kill a character, but remember, this is CoD.

Our imaginations haven't got the better of us, and in the official Season 5 notes, Activision confirms Ivan is back from the dead. The description says, "The arrival of Valeria and Ivan Alexxeve as Battle Pass Operators, plus an impressive roster of WWE superstars Rhea Ripley, “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, and Rey Mysterio."

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), someone said, "Get's betrayed and shot in the head by Konni, Survives, Rejoins Konni what the actual f**k." Ivan joins a long line of characters that Call of Duty seems unable to let go of, and with him being relatively minor, there are obvious complaints he's been saved over others.

One disgruntled gamer simply wrote, "Treyarch, please save me, Treyarch, please save me," referring to the developer taking over for Black Ops 6. Someone else wrote, "Stop bringing back every dead character, this is NOT canon," while a third joked, "This is the setup for when Soap is actually alive, 'I wasn’t in that urn' he’ll say."

Notably, there are repeated grumbles that Ivan has been saved but not John "Soap" McTavish. Soap has died in both 2011's MW3 and its 2023 counterpart, and while it remains one of the franchise's defining moments, it's not gone down well with everyone. Some have even rewritten their own headcannon where Soap survives.

If Ivan can survive a bullet to the brain, there's a chance that Soap could somehow find a way back into our lives, although we hope he stays resigned to his fate. It's not just outlandish weed sloth skins that have CoD being accused of ridiculous, and as much as some of you would like to see Soap back, please stop with the retcons.
