2020's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the closest thing to the "old-school golden age" Call of Duty that we've had since Black Ops 2. That's a fact.

While it might not have been as popular as Modern Warfare 2 and its 2019 series predecessor - given that "movement kids" preferred abusing slide cancelling on Infinity Ward's titles while having a near-instantaneous TTK - Black Ops Cold War was a complete throwback to the franchise that we grew up with.

Now, with Modern Warfare 2's pace being slowed down, fans have claimed that a sequel (a mythical Cold War 2) title would be perfect to come next and would "save" Call of Duty from its current quagmire of issues and hate from fandom.

Call of Duty fans want Cold War 2 to 'save' the franchise

Cold War didn't originally win over the entire Call of Duty community, as it wasn't as "cracked" as Modern Warfare 2019. But, with typically brilliant three-lane maps, an evenly-balanced TTK rate, fluid yet not overclocked movement, and guns that suited its style, Treyarch made a game that was arguably the best multiplayer experience we've had in the last decade.

So it comes as no surprise that fans want it back. Taking to Twitter, Twitch streamer "Kvo" argued that Cold War 2 is "The only game that can save the CoD [community]". "This game would actually f**k if they did it right, if it even exists in the future," added another.

A third sharp-shooting player added, "Yes yes yes yes yes yes this would be amazing honestly." Others also pointed out that the campaign was brilliant, alongside the Zombies modes, which could continue now that they are adding Outbreak to Modern Warfare 3.

Would Cold War 2 save Call of Duty?

Unfortunately, the probability of Cold War 2 is minuscule, especially given that Treyarch has already ironed out plans to move the timeline from the Cold War and towards the Gulf War and other proxy conflicts of the late 90s and early 2000s.

However, the 2024 title could still harness everything great about Cold War and continue to develop it, sprinkling in elements like Treyarch's best Ranked mode in years and round-based Zombies again.

The only hitch lies with Warzone, as the battle royale community loathed the changes that came from Cold War, meaning that a sequel title might have to consider its effects on the wider Call of Duty community. For now, our dreams of Cold War 2 have been frozen out.
