For as long as most players can remember, Modern Warfare and Black Ops worked in tandem, oscillating between each other with the odd Sledgehammer Games standalone game (Ghosts, Vanguard, Advanced Warfare) cropping up when there needs to be a break.

But these two series aren't the only party tricks that Infinity Ward and Treyarch, respectively, have in their playbooks.

The latter of the studios, known for its Zombies gameplay and competitive multiplayer stance, also has CoD 3 and World at War under its belt outside of Black Ops, and now Call of Duty fans are calling for it to go back to its roots and lead us on an entirely new path.

Black Ops' returning characters are causing series fatigue

Having rebooted the Black Ops series with Cold War in 2020, Treyarch is set to be running up a sequel for its renewed story with Gulf War in 2024

The developers also appear to be set to reintroduce some of the same characters and antagonists from the original series, as Raul Menendez has been leaked to feature in the new title alongside Perseus.

But a new Reddit thread has highlighted that players are a bit exasperated with Black Ops and its returning characters.

"As some who grew up with the original MW, and BO series, I would prefer they just develop new characters instead of riding on the coattails of developers from 10+ years ago," said one Redditor, who continued to point out that we've already seen Soap die twice, why does the same need to happen to the Black Ops guys too?

CoD fans call on Treyarch to ditch Black Ops

The fatigue appears to be quite widespread too, as the Reddit thread continued to have players wanting something fresh.

"I wish Treyarch would drop the 'Black Ops' titled games at this point honestly," said the most popular comment.

"I’m tired of the same characters/timeline from Treyarch and I wish they’d try something new," they added.

An abundance of fans agreed too, although most believed that Treyarch would be the best-placed studio to do so and create a range of new and beloved characters, as they did with Adler from Cold War.

It won't happen this year, at least, but Treyarch's Black Ops series does appear to be on its last legs despite the studio being heavily praised time after time for its Multiplayer and Zombies modes.
