It's that time of year when the Call of Duty fan base is fed up with the current instalment of the game and has started dredging back through previous instalments of the franchise to find something better to play.

This period of Modern Warfare 2's lifecycle has come earlier than in previous years, with the Call of Duty League season finishing, Ranked becoming tedious, and little nostalgia-fulfilling DLC features being added to keep retention high.

So, with the cycle now turning towards old Call of Duty outings, the first stop has been Black Ops Cold War (yes, we'll skim right over Vanguard), and players are just now admitting that this was an all-time great CoD.

CoD players are heading back to Black Ops Cold War and they're pleasantly surprised

Having gone free-to-play for PlayStation players and as a popular destination for pros and content creators to land in the last week, Black Ops Cold War is becoming an increasingly attractive prospect for fans to dive into - arguably offering the best multiplayer experience in the last decade of CoD releases.

At the time of its release, Black Ops Cold War was slammed for its alterations to Warzone, but now, people are headed back into battle and are only just appreciating that it was a top-tier Call of Duty game.

Having started to attract players again, Cold War is being hailed and finally appreciated, with one content creator taking to Twitter to say, "I can confidently say that if this game were released at any other time in history, it would be regarded as a top-tier Call of Duty title."

The popular tweet was backed by thousands of fans, all unanimously dying on the hill that Cold War was the best game in the post-jetpack era.

Some pointed out that its unfinished launch probably hindered many players' experiences of Cold War, alongside it being a next-gen console game which also hurt the performance of older consoles.

But if you're looking for a complete Call of Duty to play in the midst of MW2's downfall, you know where to go...
