It might feel like we've only just sat down to play Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and that's because we have. Like clockwork, we've been gifted a new Call of Duty game every year since 2003 (except 2004). This means we don't get much time to enjoy a title before the next one cannibalises it.
Love it or hate it, Call of Duty lands toward the end of the year, usually gets bundled with a Black Friday deal, and soars to the top of the gaming charts. Despite the core three of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch rotating on development, Activision is accused of a turn-and-burn approach.
Call of Duty 2024 could be heading for the Gulf War
Chatter has already turned to Call of Duty 2024, which will once again see Treyarch take the reins. Alongside being known for the Black Ops series, it's Treyarch that's responsible for the beloved Zombies mode. We've heard bits about Call of Duty 2024, but now, a supposedly major leak blows the lid off it.
Windows Central has the scoop on Call of Duty 2024, or as the site is calling it, "Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War." Considering 2020's Black Ops Cold War was an '80-set game, the rumours '90s setting of the next chapter makes sense.
Call of Duty has never been afraid to tackle controversial subject matter before, and we've heard about Treyarch adapting the controversy of the Gulf War for its next title. Windows Central backs this up, stating that Black Ops 6 will "follow some of the West's more shadowy military dealings in global conflict scenarios."
Charting the conflict between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and a coalition of US-led militaries, other main players will likely be George Bush Sr. and Margret Thatcher. It marked a new era for war as it was heavily televised, and with some of America's largest-ever tank battles, expect plenty of them from Treyarch.
Call of Duty 2024 has been in the works for years
For those who want more of a classic CoD, Windows Central says Treyarch "will lean back into more traditional military combat technology and familiar Black Ops gadgetry as opposed to the current and near-future tech we've seen from Modern Warfare and some other recent Call of Duty titles."
The other interesting tidbit is that Treyarch has apparently been beavering away on Black Ops Gulf War (or whatever it ends up being called) for years. Amidst claims Sledgehammer whipped up MW3 in just 16 months, Gulf War apparently represents the longest development time Treyarch has ever put into a Call of Duty title.
This has been backed up by CoD site CharlieIntel, but as Windows Central notes, this extended development time suggests "some of the expectations will be probably higher than usual." We've seen this story before, so let's hope Treyarch can hit these lofty heights.
