Despite originally claiming that Modern Warfare 2 is a two-year title, Activision has now reiterated that its plans have changed and there will be another premium title in 2023.
Entering the "new era" of Call of Duty, MW2 was originally planned to be a game that lasts a two-year stint, allowing the developers to have a year hiatus and gather their thoughts for the direction of the franchise.
However, the second-year DLC appears to be transforming into a whole new game, with the devs looking set to release it at a premium price later this year.
What's going on with Call of Duty 2023?
Although the developers recently announced the arrival of a new two-player game, this won't be their only release this year. Amid the Microsoft deal mayhem, they've doubled down on their stance of a 2023 Call of Duty annual release.
Following the verdict that the UK CMA has officially blocked the Microsoft and Activision merger, the Call of Duty developers released their financial report early (to prevent their stock tanking on Wall Street), confessing a huge player drop-off and detailing plans for the future.
The report reiterated that a "full annual premium release" is planned for 2023, which will ramp up their sales revenue, as per usual.
Call of Duty 2023 and Warzone: Mobile still on track to release in Q4
Alongside the unnamed Call of Duty 2023 title, Activision has also re-confirmed that Warzone: Mobile will be launching in the latter stages of this year.
Both games are expected to be launched worldwide in Q4, as is usual for the developers who love to see Christmas stockings filled with CoD games.
Elsewhere, it seems like Treyarch is refusing to move up its timeline for the Gulf War-based outing, and will be continuing with its 2024 deadline. At least that should mean Treyarch's return will be one of the most well-prepared games in years.
