Black Ops 6 feature is skipping last-gen - and CoD fans are happy about it

Treyarch has confirmed that Black Ops 6's returning Theater Mode will only be available on new-gen consoles, but some fans think it can only be a good thing.

We hope you've got your popcorn ready because Call of Duty is taking us back to the theatre. We thankfully don't mean the undead Zombies map of Kino der Toten, although we'd love to see a revamped version of that in Black Ops 6. Instead, Treyarch is gifting us the long-awaited return of Theater Mode.

While modern consoles make recording your epic kills easier than ever, Call of Duty was ahead of the curve when it introduced Theater Mode back in 2010's Black Ops. Like Zombies, Theater Mode has become a staple of Treyarch titles, and when it comes to Black Ops 6, we're excited to see the CoD community come together again.

Theater Mode isn't for everyone in Black Ops 6

News that Theater Mode is returning is a big win for Call of Duty fans, with us including it in our list of 11 things we're most excited for in Black Ops 6. However, it comes with the caveat that it will only be available for PC players and those on the PS5 and Xbox Series.

Although Black Ops 6 is once again encompassing new and old-gen consoles, PS4 and Xbox One owners will be locked out of Theater Mode and forced to eat stale popcorn off the floor. Theater Mode won't be available in the upcoming beta, but more disappointingly, an Activision blog adds, "Note that Theatre Mode is not available on previous-generation consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One)."

The news has split fans, but over on the Black Ops 6 Reddit, most see a lack of last-gen Theater Mode as a good thing. One fan joked, "If you have an old gen console I doubt you’ll be making clips anyway lol," with another adding, "They would be trying and would be posting here about how sh*t they are."

Worrying for the general state of a last-gen Black Ops 6, someone else said, "The whole game should be for current gen only, as someone concluded, "I'm literally on PS4 and agree, it’s bullsh*t they’re choosing to ass kiss last-gen console users. Man I’ll just upgrade."

We know there are still a huge portion of gamers who've struggled to get their hands on new-gen consoles due to stock issues or aren't willing to stump up $500 price tag, but with talk already turning to their successors, the PS4 and Xbox One are living on borrowed time. Many think Black Ops 6 will be the last Call of Duty to release on them.

With everything from Starfield to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth opting for new-gen-only releases, the tide is changing. Then again, with the PS5 and Xbox Series approaching their four-year anniversaries, how much longer were we expecting to hold on?
