When it comes to Respawn Entertainment's axed Star Wars first-person shooter, it seems the rumoured Mandalorian title went with the mantra of, "Let me have a warrior's death." Although news of a new title from the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi studio was only revealed in February, it's already been lost to the dark side.
Respawn is a studio on the go, and while every day takes us further away from our hopes of Titanfall 3, it's got more than enough on its plate in the form of Apex Legends and a third Jedi game with Cal Kestis. After LucasArts' Boba Fett-centric Star Wars 1313 never saw the light of day, we were excited to flex our bounty-hunting muscles.
Respawn's canned Mandalorian game sounds like a Star Wars epic
Thanks to its infancy, we don't know much about the cancelled Mandalorian game, but its young age is presumably why it was given the chop alongside 670 jobs at Electronic Arts. Now, Insider Gaming has the scoop on what could've been, revealing a game that sounds like it would've been a Star Wars Epic.
According to the site, the game followed a titular Mandalorian, although it wasn't Pedro Pascal's THE Mandalorian, aka Din Djarin. You operated out of a base of operations called 'the den,' where you selected your bounties and planned your trip across the stars while tooling up at your armoury.
It reportedly wasn't open-world as first thought, but had some larger areas to explore. The Mandalorian jetpack apparently allowed for "very fast-paced" combat, while a DOOM-inspired takedown system sounds equally showstopping.
In terms of enemy types, there were more than just waves of stormtroopers to take out - although there were plenty of variants on the standard Empire grunts. Insider Gaming says there were 'boss-like' enemies, including AT-AT walkers, while different planets had different enemies ranging from gangs to other bounty hunters.
Where's our Mandalorian game?
The worst part of it all is that Insider Gaming says playtests were always positive and surrounded by buzz. Apparently, the Mandalorian game was given the boot because it was too much of a financial risk. This seems odd, considering we've been fascinated with Mandalorians ever since the stoic Boba Fett appeared in The Empire Strikes Back.
This race of helmeted badasses has only grown in popularity thanks to the likes of The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian, so it's hard to see why EA thought this would be a gamble. Then again, Star Wars games are everywhere right now, and the last thing you'd want is a title to take away from the Jedi series.
Just because Respawn's Mandalorian game has had its bounty claimed, it doesn't mean someone else can't pick up the reins. It feels like we're constantly hearing rumours of a AAA Mandalorian game, and even though EA is bowing out of this fight, we hope another developer sees the potential here. Then again, remember, "Bounty hunting is a complicated profession."
