This is Amanda Ripley signing off, as Alien: Blackout is being delisted from stores just four years after it was released. While Creative Assembly was onto a winner with 2014's Alien: Isolation, its mobile follow-up failed to reach the same highs of the survival horror.
Following the events of Alien: Isolation, Amanda Ripley is once again thrown into a race against time with an acid-bleeding Xenomorph. This time, she wakes up on the Mendel space station and is put through her paces in a point-and-click horror similar to Five Nights at Freddy's.
Alien: Blackout is being blasted out of the airlock
On the official Alien: Blackout Twitter, developer D3 Go announced that it was time to "sunset" the 2019 mobile title. From now until the end of October, Alien: Blackout will be available on Android and iOS for just $0.99/£0.99.
You'll still be able to play Alien: Blackout from this date, although there will be no further updates or support. If you're a fan of Isolation and want to stay with this universe, you might as well try out Blackout while you can.
Unfortunately, Alien: Blackout being blasted out of the airlock comes as no real surprise. Despite continuing the story started in Isolation, Fox reiterated (via Game Informer) that it should be considered "a standalone game that shares Amanda Ripley as a main character but is not related to or a sequel of Isolation."
Why has there never been an Alien: Isolation sequel?
To this day, Alien: Isolation is held as one of the scariest games of all time. It's never really gone away, and with it arriving as part of October's PlayStation Plus offerings, it's sure to find a new legion of fans. Sadly, those dreams of a full-blown sequel have never come to pass.
There have been plenty of rumours about Alien: Isolation 2, but Creative Assembly has repeatedly downplayed the idea. The recent canning of HYENAS could give rise to hopes that the developer will return to the IP, but with reports of layoffs, we wouldn't hold our breath.
The Alien name has expanded far beyond the original run of Sigourney Weaver-led movies, and while some have been pretty middling, Alien: Isolation is one of the rare Alien games that's been met with almost universal praise. We hope to see Amanda Ripley again one day, but in the meantime, download Blackout while you can.
